Interview prep, by level

The interview you get at SDE 1 and the interview you get at Staff Engineer are not the same interview with harder questions — they test different things almost entirely. Pick your actual level below.

Why level changes everything

Most interview prep content treats "software engineer interview" as one thing with a difficulty dial. It is not. At SDE 1, roughly half the interview is data structures and algorithms and system design barely appears. By Staff Engineer, DSA has faded to a brief sanity check and the interview is almost entirely system design, technical strategy, and whether you can get a decision adopted by a team that does not report to you. Preparing for the wrong axis is the single most common way strong candidates underperform — a Staff candidate who grinds LeetCode instead of rehearsing scope stories, or an SDE 1 candidate who studies distributed systems instead of sliding-window problems.

Each guide below is built around that level's actual loop: how many rounds of what kind, which patterns or design depth show up, what the behavioral round is really checking for, and a realistic prep timeline.

The five levels

How MyCareerAtlas approaches prep

The same level data that drives these guides also drives the product: a Career Memory confirmed once feeds level suggestions, question selection, and readiness scoring that is relative to your actual target level rather than one blended average. A Staff candidate with strong system-design evidence and light DSA reads as ready; an SDE 1 candidate with the same profile would not, because the bar for each level is genuinely different, not just a harder cut of the same score.

Beyond the guides on this page, a free account gets you timed DSA practice with real code execution and hidden tests, an AI coach that gives progressively stronger hints instead of the answer, AI-scored system design attempts, and a mock interview mode once your journey reaches that stage — all organized around your confirmed level, alongside the rest of the Career OS: run job searches against real ATS boards and track everything in Career Tickets — so the same account carries you from prep through the offer.

Frequently asked questions

Why organize interview prep by level instead of by topic?
Because the bar genuinely changes by level, not just the difficulty. SDE 1 is almost entirely DSA. By Staff, DSA is marginal and system design, technical strategy, and cross-team influence carry the interview. A single generic list flattens that difference and either wastes an SDE 1 candidate’s time on system design or under-prepares a Staff candidate on scope.
Which level should I prepare for?
Match it to the title you are actually interviewing for, not the title you hope to reach. Interviewers calibrate questions and the bar to the role’s level — over-preparing DSA for a Staff loop or under-preparing system design for a Senior loop both waste real prep time.
Do you cover behavioral and management-track interviews?
Not yet. This first phase covers the individual-contributor ladder from SDE 1 through Principal Engineer, focused on data structures and algorithms and system design. Behavioral-focused tracks and management levels (EM, Director) are planned for a later phase.
Is there a hands-on practice tool, or is this just guides?
Today, this is a set of guides — what actually gets asked at each level, and how to spend limited prep time. Interactive, AI-evaluated practice with code execution and mock interviews is in active development. Creating a free account gets you the parts of MyCareerAtlas that are live now — Career Memory, job matching, and application tracking — and puts you first in line as practice ships.
